Dear friends,
Please help spread the word. We are asking for calls TODAY to City Council and the Mayor.
The City of Houston is asking Gov. Abbott for nearly $20 Million dollars to purchase new waste trucks as part of the Volkswagen Settlement. The VW Settlement is a great opportunity for the city to look into alternative fuels ( <https://cleantechnica.com/2014/09/16/first-electric-garbage-truck-in-us-hauls-9-tons-of-chicago-trash/> like electric) to not only reduce harmful NOx emissions but also to reduce its carbon footprint. The City of Houston has done a lot to become a leader in green energy, and was honored last month by the EPA as a Green Power Leader. Moving toward greener fleet technology is a natural step for the City. Mayor Turner has also been an outspoken advocate for the climate, stating that Houston will honor the Paris Climate Agreement.
Out of the 85 vehicles that the City is seeking to replace with these funds, however, their proposal has only 14 CNG vehicles listed. This is not acceptable, and even goes against the CIP amendments approved by Council which reads:
In order to realize cost savings in vehicle purchases (available through multiple State and Federal grant programs), fuel purchases, and to decrease carbon emissions by the City's fleet, establish a goal that at least 25% of non-emergency on-road vehicles purchased annually ... be non-diesel- or gasoline-powered (e.g. CNG-, LNG-, propane-, electric-powered, etc.). The VW Settlement is an incredible opportunity for the City to bring in new. cleaner vehicles, and we urge the City to lead strongly here through alternatives like EV waste haulers.
Contact the Mayor's office and City Hall to let them know what you think. You can read the statement above or create your own statement.
